Harmony Day Participate in a Harmony Day Event
Harmony Day, which began in 1999, occurs on 21st March each year and celebrates Australia's success as a diverse society united by a common set of values. The day provides an opportunity for us to think about our shared values such as mutual respect, participation, opportunity and a fair go for all. The Government promotes and funds harmony day in order for us to learn more about the diversity in our community and appreciate the many benefits such diversity brings to our society.

On this day it is important to highlight and celebrate Indigenous cultures and their contribution to Australian society as well as the richness and diversity that other cultures have brought to Australia.  NATSIEC have put together a few ideas taken from the Harmony Day website,

Women's History Month 2007

womens HistoryArm in Arm: Indigenous and non-Indigenous Women Working Together is the theme for this years Women's history Month and celebrates the ways many Indigenous and non-Indigenous women have worked together. The inspiration came from the women who played a major role in the 1967 Referendum which removed from Australia's constitution the clause discriminating against Aboriginal people.

Visit the WHM website where you will find some wonderful features such as:  Gallery 2007 where you can browse photos and stories relating to this year's theme; Who's Who '07 with links to the bios of some interesting women; and the updated Books for '07 which contains a reading list relevant to the theme.

Disability and Development – Ensuring rights and stopping discrimination.

Disability

"Disability is an issue that does not exist in isolation. If we do not understand this, the development that we expect to achieve will not be possible', said Abdus Sattar Dalal as he launched the Australian Disability and Development Consortium (ADDC) at the Australian Federal Parliament House on 26th February. The launch of the ADDC is very timely as it comes as the UN has put forth its first human rights convention this century focused on establishing the rights of People with Disabilities. Nations are being called to sign the UN Convention on 30th March 2007.

Read more about the consortium and why it is important for us to support the UN convention on the Rights and Dignity of Person's with Disabilities…
