The fight to make poverty history is not over yet!
Please buy a white arm band and wear it to send a signal to the Australian Government that at the UN Summit on poverty on September 10 2005, Prime Minister Howard has the opportunity to announce a timetable to increase Australia's aid level to 0.5 per cent of Gross National Income from 0.28 per cent where it now currently stands and show that Australians are committed to increasing aid, canceling debt and improving trade.
Unfortunately, Caritas Australia can't still offer 'Make Poverty History' armbands for free. But we are able to offer them for sale for $2 each. Please order your armbands by going to the Caritas Australia website www.caritas.org.au/education/mph_events.htm

Band together to fight poverty
-
Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.
-
According to UNICEF, 30,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they "die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death."

How the G8 lied to the world on aid
"World leaders are now preparing for the millennium summit to be held in New York next month, described by the UN as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity to take bold decisions". Yet the current draft outcome simply repeats what was agreed on aid and debt last month in Gleneagles. The reality of that G8 deal has recently emerged - and is likely to condemn the New York summit to be an expensive failure." Mark Curtis, Guardian
Poverty not the fault of corruption alone
"But just as poverty is not c aused by corruption alone, it cannot be eradicated purely by tackling corruption and governance issues. This is the reason why the Make Poverty History campaign is calling for all countries, including Australia, to do their fair share to eliminate the global injustice of poverty, through more and better aid, debt relief and fairer trade."
